Watering Balls
This is a unique product that sells very quickly. And it is repeat seller. Once someone buys one, they use it and come back for one for each of their plants.
The watering balls shown here are hand blown glass. After being formed the hot glass ball is rolled in a special mix of glass pellets that, because the glass is just below the melting point, stick to the ball. The ball is then reheated and the color flows over the ball.
Because the colored glass pellets attach themselves randomly to the hot ball, the color patterns that result are in themselves, random in nature. So when you order them you must expect a rainbow of colors.
You will find that customers generally do not know what they are. In our shop in Warsaw we sell many of them but only after we explain to people what they are. That is, however, a very simple process that results in repeat sales and long term customers.
At the checkout counter we keep a plant with a watering ball inserted. The sales staff is careful to point out the watering ball if the customer does not notice it and comment on what a nice decoration it makes for a potted plant. When they find that ball is actually keeping the plant watered, they are quite surprised. And in a high percentage of the time, they buy at least one.
Here is a picture of one of the pots that we have used in the store. As a matter of course, we change plants and displays often so when people come back everything looks new to them.
What is most interesting, is that many times tourists return to their hone country and regret having bought only one. They call us and order some over the phone. And some have even sent friends to find us and buy them.
Watering balls are designed to slowly release water to drying soil. To use a watering ball:
1. Create a channel in the soil by placing the stem of the empty watering ball into the soil at a slight angle
2. Remove the watering ball from the soil and clear any soil from stem of the watering ball.
3. Fill the watering ball to 2/3 with water and place in previously-created channel.
4. Refill as necessary.
Here are more pictures of individual balls that show you some of the colors.
